Keynote Address: "Developing Musical Minds and Hearts"
Today's digital world emphasizes and rewards logical, sequential thinking. But what about the richness of creativity, expression and personal artistry? These are developed in the heart...and in the piano lesson!
"Ten Teaching Tips to Improve Artistry and Communication"
This workshop will provide strategies and inspiration to help you teach students how to improve their ability to play with expression, emotion, and communication. Topics include use of descriptive language and imagery, mechanics at the keyboard for better variety of sound, discovering and organizing patterns in the score, and more. Audience participation (optional) is encouraged in advance (online survey) and will be used during the session to create a discussion-based and participatory environment for learning.
"Teaching Style Differences"
What is it that defines a style period? We will look at the major cultural influences on Baroque, Classical,Romantic, and early 20th century composers. How composers used melody, rhythm, form, and other elements of music is key to determining the style. How ornamentation varies with style periods will also be explored.

"The Score Speaks: Teaching Interpretation Through Musical Mapping"
Teachers have multiple tasks in creating well-rounded musicians. When teaching interpretation, we can easily default to coaching our own ideas. But students can learn to be independent interpreters from their youngest years. Dr. Osborn will explore the idea of creative “Mapping” as a tool for encouraging interpretation. She will discuss how Resource Charts and Mapping lead to the creation of stories and art, thus opening a gateway for more imaginative musical thinking.
In this overview of many teaching pieces in the jazz idioms, from late elementary to late intermediate levels, we will discuss how to interpret swing rhythms; when to add grace notes; the role of tempo choice; and how students and teachers can broaden their understanding of the Jazz idiom through the written score.

In this session, Catherine will demonstrate how we can use dance, vocal, instrumental, and artwork imagery to spark the imaginations of our students, leading them to convincing and magical performances.

RANDALL FABER has appeared at the Gilmore Festival, the Wasserman Festival, the Portland International Piano Festival, the Korean Piano Adventures Convention in Seoul, and has toured Taiwan, Southeast Asia, England and Australia. While in Korea, Faber appeared on the popular television show Heart-to-Heart, which is broadcast in 188 countries, and his solo recital in Chicago was broadcast live on WFMT public radio. In recent seasons, Faber toured Southeast Asia, Taiwan, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. He was a Convention Artist for the Music Teachers National Association Conference and master teacher for the World Conference on Piano Pedagogy, National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, and the National Piano Teachers Institute. He gave recent recitals in Denver, Kansas City, Chicago, Austin, Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Alberta, Seoul, and Jakarta. Faber is a Steinway Artist. Randall Faber holds three degrees from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Education and Human Development from Vanderbilt University. In 2005, he presented his scholarly research at the 9th International Conference on Motivation in Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Faber is currently Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Seoul Arts College in Korea. He has presented as Visiting Artist at universities throughout North America and Asia. Randall and his wife Nancy are well known as authors of the bestselling Piano Adventures® teaching method and their many publications for the piano. They are co-founders of the Faber Piano Institute.
Nancy Bachus is the author of the “Spirit” and Exploring Piano Classics series for Alfred Publishing. She has presented workshops and master classes across North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and China. Currently she teaches independently and at Cleveland State University.
Tony Caramia is Professor of Piano at the Eastman School of Music, where he is Director of Piano Pedagogy Studies and Coordinator of the Class Piano Program. He has conducted numerous workshops in jazz piano for teachers at MTNA National and State Conventions and at several international conferences.
Katherine Faricy served on the faculty at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul where she taught undergraduate and graduate piano plus related courses. During her studies with the renowned concert pianist, Madame Lili Kraus, she learned the importance of pedaling in artistic performance and its technique. The lack of materials for teaching pedaling led Faricy to create two valuable books on pedaling pedagogy.
Jensina Oliver has appeared as soloist and chamber musician in the United States, China, Canada, Costa Rica, Israel, and throughout Europe. She earned her DMA at the University of Washington and has taught several piano and music courses at Shoreline Community College since 1998. A well-known performer, teacher, clinician, and adjudicator, she is also a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music and has a thriving studio with students of all ages.
Dr. Susan Osborn is on the Keyboard Skills faculty of Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. She also teaches private and group piano at Northwestern University Music Academy and at Interlochen Arts Camp. Dr. Osborn is an active performer, adjudicator and clinician in the Chicago area and specializes in interdisciplinary topics that combine her passions for music, photography and architecture.
Catherine Rollin is well known as a composer, clinician, author of a college text and a dedicated teacher of prize winning students. She has over 400 publications with Alfred Publishing Co. and has presented workshops and master classes throughout the U.S., Canada, Japan and Taiwan.
Founder ELIZABETH GUTIERREZ began Piano Camp for Piano Teachers in 2009 as an extension of the instructional blog of the same name - pianoteachercamp.com. She has years of experience teaching piano, piano pedagogy, and piano literature to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has given numerous workshops and master classes to working independent teachers around the globe both in person and via livestream on Facebook and Periscope and also as a national clinician for Faber Piano Adventures. For her workshops and online courses, she draws on her extensive background as an independent teacher, professor, performer, and composer/editor/author.
